Khao & Bao, previously Bao Wow, is a sister restaurant of the popular Sticks n Broth also located on Balwin Street and the newly opened Bangkok Joes – that I am yet to venture to, but is very much top of my list.
A little over a week ago I was pretty much devastated as a colleague of mine returned to work with the terrible news that Bao Wow had closed down and a quick search on Twitter confirmed this closure. As my favourite lunchtime destination Bao Wow delivered delicious asian flavours for really reasonable prices.
I was delighted to hear through Facebook that in fact it seems Bao Wow has instead come back to life with a lick of paint and a rebrand to Khao & Bao. Focusing their culinary efforts on ‘rice and buns’ and giving their Pho a miss. To be honest I am not too bothered about the loss of the Pho which was my least favourite of their dishes. Their rice and bun dishes on the other hand are delicious and going for these main dishes on their new menu is certainly playing to their strengths.
In no time at all our lunch dishes were out in front of us. I opted for the Little Piggy Bao and the Cow Bao whereas my friend had the grilled lemongrass chicken with soy sauce which came with rice, roasted veg, green veg and chilli and coriander to garnish.
Both of my baos were delicious, pillowy buns with a good amount of tender meat and the veg that kept them tasting pretty fresh. Each bao is £3.50, or two for £6.50. You can grab two and some chips for £8. I feel this is a bit too large as a lunch for me so don’t think I’ll be going for this in the future but as the menu seems to be the same for both lunch and dinner this would be really reasonable prices for evening meals.
Khao and Bao Menu
There is a great selection on the menu and I’m looking forward to trying out a Khao box on my next visit.
Khao and Bao is a great little find, definitely worth visit for some delicious and reasonably priced asian food.
Looks like they are working on their website but you can see Khao and Bao’s twitter here
